General Steps for 2FA

1. Choose a Method:

  • Text Message (SMS): You’ll receive a code via SMS each time you log in.
  • Authentication App: Apps like Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator generate time-based codes.
  • Security Key: A physical device used to authenticate your login.

2. Enter Verification Code:

  • After enabling 2FA, you’ll be prompted to enter a code sent to your phone or generated by your authentication app when logging in.

3. Backup Codes:

  • Many platforms provide backup codes that you can use if you lose access to your primary 2FA method. Store these codes in a safe place.

Enabling 2FA significantly enhances the security of your accounts by requiring a second form of verification in addition to your password.

3. Be Cautious with Phishing Scams

Example of a Phishing Scam

Phishing Indicators:

  • Verify the Sender:

    • Check the email address carefully. Legitimate companies will use their official domains. In this case, Facebook would use an @facebookmail.com address.
  • Look for Personalization:

    • Genuine emails from social media platforms often address you by name, not as “User” or “Customer.”
  • Inspect Links Before Clicking:

    • Hover over links to see the actual URL. Do not click on links that look suspicious or lead to unfamiliar websites.
  • Do Not Provide Personal Information:

    • Legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive information (such as passwords) via email.
  • Access the Website Directly:

    • Instead of clicking on the link, open a new browser window and type the official website URL manually (e.g., www.facebook.com). Log in from there to check for any notifications.
  • Enable Security Features:

    • Use security features provided by your email service, such as spam filters and phishing alerts.
  • Report Suspicious Emails:

    • If you receive a phishing email, report it to the company being impersonated. Most companies have dedicated email addresses for reporting phishing (e.g., Facebook’s is phish@fb.com).
